LOUISE HUEBNER

Coming from roughly the same era that produced occult celebs like Anton LaVey and Sybil Leek, Huebner was media savvy enough to conjure a 1968 government-issued designation for herself as "Official Witch Of Los Angeles County", and she followed that coup a year later with this LP. Largely adapted from her book of the same name, it's a reverb-heavy collection of scratchily-voiced incantations centered around "charms of seduction and sexual power", and has always struck me as a fully entertaining listen from start to finish."

Nam June Paik participated in Fluxus. He made his big debut at the Exposition of Music-Electronic Television, in which he scattered televisions everywhere, and used magnets to alter or distort their images. In 1964, Paik moved to New York, and began working with cellist Charlotte Moorman. In a notorious 1967 incident, Moorman was arrested for going topless while performing Paik's Opera Sextronique. Two years later, they performed TV Bra for Living Sculpture, in which Charlotte wore a bra with small TV screens over her breasts.

"Variations on a Theme by Saint-Saens", by Nam June Paik

I documented this version of Charlotte Moorman performing Nam June Paik's "Variations on a Theme by Saint-Saens" at the ORF Studios in Linz, Austria, on the occasion of the Sky Art Conference/Ars Electronica in 1982. This, and other performance art works by Paik and Moorman, were produced by the Center For Advanced Visual Studies, MIT, Cambridge, MA, under the coordination and vision of then-director Otto Piene. 

"Variations" represents one of Paik's best examples of Fluxus-based performance art. If you can dedicate the 7 minutes needed to watching this video, try to stay with it from beginning to end in order to enjoy the full effect.

"Sky Kiss - Linz"
Otto Piene brought Charlotte Moorman to the Sky Art Conference/Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria in 1982 to perform "Sky Kiss". With the assistance of many volunteers, an array of helium-filled tubes was gathered together, and Charlotte and her cello were lifted off the ground in the vicinity of the Danube River.
The video begins with an interview I made of Charlotte on the roof top of her New York studio in 1982, just prior to the performance in Austria.


"Cut Piece"

Charlotte Moorman performed this version of Yoko Ono's "Cut Piece" at the ORF Television Studios in Linz, Austria, for the Sky Art Conference/Ars Electronica in 1982. This is one of a series of performances by Charlotte Moorman and Nam June Paik that took place for this event (see "Sky Kiss - Linz"). I was fortunate to have the opportunity to record these performance art works on video for M.I.T.'s Center For Advanced Visual Studies.

Charlotte tells the story of the 1964 New City performance of Nam June Paik's piece, "the Opera Sextronic. The police interrupted the performance and arrested Charlotte. Her trial led to an opening up of censorship in the arts.
The video is one section of the work by Fred Stern, "Charlotte Morman and the New York Avante Garde" by Fred Stern. It was filmed in 1980 under a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

Creador de un talento artístico y tecnológico extraordinario, ''creyente del cinema'' e iluminado por unos nuevos horizontes que formuló mediante las siglas PLAT --que equivalen al concepto totalizador de Picto-Lumínica-Audio-Táctil--, Val del Omar fue contemporáneo y camarada de Lorca, Cernuda, Renau, Zambrano y otros nombres mayores de una Edad de Plata truncada con la Guerra Civil. En 1928 anticipó ya varias de sus técnicas más características, incluyendo el ''desbordamiento apanorámico de la imagen'' fuera de los límites de la pantalla y el concepto de ''visión táctil''. Dichas técnicas, y las del ''sonido diafónico'' y otras exploraciones en el campo sonoro, las aplicaría en su Tríptico Elemental de España, iniciado en 1952 y sólo concluido póstumamente. Pues su obra y su tenaz actividad investigadora --a contrapelo de la incomprensión y el olvido-- no empezaron a ser redescubiertas hasta poco antes de su muerte, siendo en cambio el principio de un renacimiento que sigue ganando adeptos. ''Sin fin'' como él ponía al término de sus films.

SIGALIT LANDAU

Sigalit Landau, née en 1969, vit à Tel Aviv. Elle a été sélectionnée, deux ans seulement après sa sortie de la Bezalel Academy of Art de Jerusalem, pour représenter l'Israël à la Biennale de Venise de 1997. Elle est aujourd’hui l’une des artistes israeliennes les plus célèbres.

Ses installations et interventions se construisent à partir d’une réalité ordinaire avec son compte de brutalité et de cruauté mais aussi sa part de merveilleux. Elles ont la démesure d’un conte pour enfants.

En se penchant sur son identité israélienne, ses travaux mettent en question le corps, le lieu et les frontières, l’étranger et la migration, l’individu et la société, la réalité et l’utopie. Pour cela, l’artiste se sert de techniques diverses et fait se rejoindre à des niveaux formels et narratifs différents, la sculpture, l’installation, la vidéo et la performance.

Barbed Hula

Dans la vidéo Barbed Hula l’artiste israélienne Sigalit Landau est filmée nue, sur une plage au sud de Tel Aviv, en train de faire du hula hoop, le dos face à la mer. Mais son cerceau n’est pas en plastique, il est en fil de fer barbelé.

Ce qui, d’une part, est connu comme un jeu d’enfant anodin, et qui d’autre part à été interdit par exemple au Japon à cause de son côté erotique évident, présent aussi dans la vidéo de Sigalit Landau, se transfrome en un rituel frénétique autodestructeur.
